Smeraldo attended Rhode Island School of Design, Massachusetts College of Art and NSCAD Univ. She received the first NS Cultural Life Award and the Progress Club of Canada’s Women of Excellence Award in Arts and Culture. She helped found Crafts NS and was President, Standards Chair, Honourary Member. She also founded the Halifax Studio School of Pottery, Atlantic Pottery Supply School and One Off Studio. She is now a fine art Pastelist.
